Parque Nacional Royal Chitwan se coloca hoy como testimonio de éxito de la conservación de la naturaleza en el sur de Asia. Este es el primer parque nacional de Nepal creada en 1973 para preservar un ecosistema único significativamente valiosa para el mundo entero. El parque cubre un área prístina de 932 kilómetros cuadrados se encuentra en las tierras bajas de Terai subtropicales interiores de la parte centro-sur de Nepal. El parque ha ganado mucho más amplio reconocimiento en el mundo cuando la UNESCO incluyó este ámbito en la lista de Patrimonio de la Humanidad en el año 1984.
Anteriormente, el valle de Chitwan era bien conocido por la caza mayor y fue gestionado exclusivamente como un coto de caza para los primeros ministros Rana y sus invitados hasta 1950. En 1963, la zona sur de Rapti fue demarcada como un santuario de rinocerontes. En 1970, Su Majestad el Rey Mahendra tarde había aprobado en principio la creación del Parque Nacional Royal Chitwan.
