Orchha es hoy una pequeña aldea soñolienta, pero que una vez fue la capital del poderoso imperio Bundelkhand. Desde tiempo inmemorial, Bundelkhand ha sido un destino importante para todo tipo de turistas y viajeros. El famoso peregrino chino, Hiuen Tsang, visitó la zona en el siglo séptimo anuncio y dio un vívido relato del reino de 'Jejakabhuti', que corresponde al día moderno Bundelkhand y una pequeña parte de Bagelkhand también.
Orchha en su forma actual, fue fundada en el siglo XVI a.d. Por el jefe de Bundela, Rudra Pratap. Los Bundelas eran una tribu guerrera que remontaba su ascendencia a un príncipe Rajput medieval que sacrificaba su vida por la diosa de la montaña, Vrindavasini. A cambio, la diosa proclamó que de ahora en adelante, él y sus descendientes serían conocidos como "Bundelas", o "aquellos que donaron sangre". Se dice que los Orchha Bundelas son jefes del clan Bundela que se asentaron en las llanuras del norte de la India.
