Si dice che il re Gun Kamdev fondò Kathmandu nell'anno 723 d.C. Se segui la leggenda, l'area era un lago in passato. A una divinità buddista di nome Manjushri piaceva il posto e voleva abitare lì. Il dio buddista allora biforcò la collina a sud e permise all'acqua di defluire. Mentre l'acqua scorreva fuori, la regione divenne abitabile. Naturalmente, questa è una tradizione buddista ed è diversa da quella degli indù. L'origine del nome è ancora poco chiara e gli storici lanciano nuove teorie a giorni alterni secondo il loro capriccio e le loro fantasie. Tuttavia una delle teorie più probabili è che prende il nome da Kastha-Mandap ("tempio del legno" in sanscrito). Il re Laxmi Narashingha Malla commissionò una pagoda scolpita dal singolo albero nel 1596 e potrebbe essere possibile che la stessa pagoda sia dietro la sua denominazione.
