Il est dit que le roi Gun Kamdev fondée Katmandou en l'an 723 de notre ère. Si vous allez par la légende, la région était un lac dans le passé. Roi Laxmi Narashingha Malla a commandé une pagode sculptée de l'arbre unique en 1596 et il pourrait être possible que la même pagode est derrière son nom.
