Orchha aujourd'hui est un petit hameau endormi, mais il était une fois la capitale du puissant empire Bundelkhand. Depuis des temps immémoriaux, Bundelkhand a été une importante destination pour toutes sortes de touristes et de voyageurs. Le célèbre pèlerin chinois, Hiuen Tsang, a visité la région dans le 7ème siècle de notre ère et a donné un récit très vivant du royaume de 'Jejakabhuti', ce qui correspond à nos jours Bundelkhand et une petite partie de Bagelkhand ainsi.
Orchha tel qu'il est aujourd'hui, a été fondée au 16ème siècle de notre ère par le chef Bundela, Rudra Pratap. Les Bundelas étaient une tribu guerrière qui a tracé leur ascendance à un prince Rajput médiévale qui a sacrifié sa vie pour la déesse de la montagne, Vrindavasini. En retour, la déesse a proclamé que désormais, lui et ses descendants serait connu comme 'Bundelas », ou« ceux qui ont donné du sang'. Le Orchha Bundelas sont dits chefs du clan Bundela installés partout dans les plaines du nord de l'Inde.
