Onam es la fiesta más popular de Kerala (un estado costero del sur de la India). Se trata de un festival hindú, que se celebra con gran entusiasmo en toda Kerala por un período de diez días. Cada año este festival cae en el mes de Malayalam Chingam - entre agosto y septiembre, y también conocido como el festival de la cosecha de Kerala.
Onam es uno de los más antiguos festivales hindúes que todavía se celebran con una gran devoción. Onam marca el regreso a casa del rey Mahabali, un legendario rey, que gobernó Kerala en la antigüedad. Ese período se cree que es la edad de oro de Karala, la gente estaba feliz, libre de daño y completa armonía y prosperidad estaba allí.
