Kerala et ses backwaters zigzag sont célèbre pour ses courses de bateaux locales tenues dans différentes parties de l'Etat au cours de la saison de la récolte. La course de bateaux Champakulam est la première course a eu lieu au cours de cette saison et a une tradition de plus de 500 ans. La course annuelle de bateaux traditionnels commence à la fin Juin et début Juillet. Ce festival est reconnu comme 'Moolam Vallamkali'. Il est fortement relié à la Krishna Temple Sree au Ambalappuzha. La course est effectuée le jour Moolam dans le malayalam mois Midhunam, le jour de la divinité au Temple d'installation.
