La gara di barche Champakulam è la gara iniziale che si tiene durante questa stagione e ha una tradizione di oltre 500 anni. La tradizionale gara annuale in barca inizia tra la fine di giugno e l'inizio di luglio. Questo festival è riconosciuto come "Moolam Vallamkali". È fortemente collegato al Tempio Sree Krishna di Ambalappuzha. La gara si svolge il giorno del Moolam nel mese di Malayalam Midhunam, il giorno dell'installazione della divinità al Tempio.
