Onam è uno dei più antichi festival indù che è ancora celebrato con grande devozione. Onam segna il ritorno a casa del re Mahabali, un re leggendario, che governò il Kerala nei tempi antichi. Si credeva che quel periodo fosse l'epoca d'oro del Karala, la gente era felice, libera dai danni e c'era completa armonia e prosperità.
